The Freedom Sculpture
2017
The Freedom Sculpture is a monumental public artwork designed by renowned structural engineer and artist Cecil Balmond, inspired by the ancient Cyrus Cylinder dating to 539 BCE. The large scale cylindrical form is composed of intricate interlocking steel and gold toned metal elements arranged in a complex lattice pattern, resting on two sweeping curved stainless steel arches. The work embodies principles of freedom and human rights as first articulated by the Persian Achaemenid king Cyrus the Great, making it a powerful symbol of political idealism and universal humanitarian values. Collectors and institutions drawn to works at the intersection of architectural thinking and public art will find this piece a compelling acquisition.
