Cecil Balmond is a Sri Lankan-born British structural engineer, designer, and visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice bridges architecture, mathematics, and fine art. Trained as a structural engineer and long associated with the global engineering firm Arup, where he served as deputy chairman, Balmond developed a profound interest in the underlying mathematical and algorithmic patterns that govern both natural and built environments. His visual art practice extends directly from these intellectual preoccupations, exploring number sequences, fractal geometries, and self-organizing systems as the generative basis for abstract visual compositions. His work challenges the boundary between scientific thinking and artistic expression, treating mathematics not as a tool of constraint but as a source of infinite creative possibility.
