Glowstick 5 presents a vertical column of saturated, luminous colour contained within a deceptively simple industrial framework. Created in 2016 by David Batchelor, this work measures an imposing 200 by 75 by 10 centimetres and belongs to a body of work that treats colour as a physical, almost electrical presence rather than a pictorial element. Batchelor constructs these pieces using found fluorescent tubes and commercial light sources housed in utilitarian steel or aluminium supports, transforming mass-produced components into objects of remarkable visual intensity. The result is something that hovers between sculpture and painting, between the everyday and the transcendent. Batchelor has long been preoccupied with what he calls chromophobia, the cultural suspicion of vivid colour in Western art and design, and the Glowstick series can be read as a direct rejoinder to that tradition.
