Adriatic

1968

Adriatic is a commanding Color Field painting by Helen Frankenthaler, created in 1968 using her celebrated soak stain technique in which diluted acrylic paint is poured directly onto raw canvas, allowing colors to saturate and merge organically. The composition is dominated by luminous, layered oranges and ambers anchored by a deep violet band along the lower edge, evoking the shimmering light and water of the Adriatic Sea. The raw cotton weave remains visible beneath the thinly applied paint, giving the surface a breathtaking atmospheric translucency. Frankenthaler donated this work directly to the Pasadena Art Museum in 1969, and it now resides in the permanent collection of the Norton Simon Museum under accession number P.1969.138.

Medium
Acrylic on canvas

Notes

Museum wall label text includes a 1989 quote by the artist: 'What concerns me when I work is not whether the picture is a landscape, or whether it's pastoral, or whether someone will see a sunset in it. What concerns me is did I make a beautiful picture?' The soak-stain effect is particularly visible in the lower-left corner of the composition. Accession number: P.1969.138. Acquisition method: Gift of the Artist.
