Plasmatic Rhomboid (Mercury)
2024
A luminous, biomorphic sculptural form by Puerto Rican-American artist Gisela Colón, this work belongs to her celebrated 'Pod' series and exemplifies her signature 'structural color' technique. The oval-shaped blow-molded acrylic piece radiates shifting iridescent tones — from pale chartreuse and gold at the top to deep violet and green at the base — activated entirely by ambient light. Colón developed this process through over a decade of collaboration with aerospace and scientific partners, layering engineered materials to produce color that requires no pigment. The work reflects her deep connection to the natural world, the cosmos, and the landscapes of Puerto Rico and California.

Notes
Exhibited in 'Gisela Colón: Radiant Earth' at the Bruce Museum, opening January 24. The exhibition presents the artist's glowing biomorphic 'Pods' and monumental 'Monoliths.' Colón began her career as a painter and has spent more than a decade collaborating with aerospace and scientific partners to explore engineered materials including plastics, environmentally sustainable carbon fiber, and resins. Her process, called 'structural color,' layers materials to create shifting radiant tones activated entirely by light.
