First Come the Dreamers
2026
A pair of oversized eyeglasses dominates this horizontal composition, their frames rendered in bleached denim and assembled on panel. The lenses are filled with photographic imagery of cumulus clouds against blue sky, creating an optical illusion where the viewer's gaze is both directed through and reflected by the work. The denim material, characteristic of Doyle's practice, is meticulously collaged and faded to suggest both wear and transcendence, collapsing the boundary between everyday textile and ethereal vision. The work engages with American iconography of aspiration and sight while questioning what we see and how we see it, positioning the viewer as simultaneously observer and observed.
