Plastic Eden

2026

A monumental cactus rendered in bleached and collaged denim dominates the composition, its columnar arms rising vertically against a neutral ground. A delicate wading bird, rendered in pale tones, nests within the plant's protective embrace, creating an unexpected juxtaposition between the arid desert ecosystem and fragile wildlife. The work employs Doyle's signature technique of layering and assembling denim fragments, allowing the material's inherent texture and worn surface to suggest both the harsh spines of the plant and the soft plumage of the bird. White speckled marks across the cactus suggest a desert landscape rendered through textile and collage, while the muted blue and grey palette creates an atmospheric, dreamlike quality. The piece interrogates themes of refuge, survival, and beauty within hostile environments, using working class denim as a vehicle for reimagining natural subjects as sites of narrative and vulnerability.
