Barnyard
1950
Barnyard is a modernist oil on canvas by Herman Maril, painted in 1950, depicting a stylized rural scene anchored by a dark shed with a gridded window and a clothesline strung with boldly colored laundry against a pale blue sky. A large red rooster dominates the foreground alongside smaller yellow chicks on the green ground, rendered with the simplified forms and expressive brushwork characteristic of Maril's mature style. The composition balances geometric structure with organic vitality, reflecting the artist's synthesis of American modernism and everyday rural life. This work was sold by Berta Walker Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and shipped to collector Jon Murray in September 2014.
