Maiakowskij, after Rodchenko (Pictures of Caviar)
2004
Vik Muniz recreates Alexander Rodchenko's iconic portrait of the Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky using carefully arranged clusters of caviar, transforming the luxurious delicacy into a medium for artistic and political commentary. The resulting chromogenic print captures the tension between the austere, constructivist ideals of the original image and the opulent material used to reconstruct it. This work is part of Muniz's broader "Pictures of Caviar" series, in which he explores themes of value, representation, and the relationship between substance and image.
