Floor Scrapers, after Gustave Caillebotte from Pictures of Magazines 2
2011
In this striking chromogenic print, Vik Muniz recreates Gustave Caillebotte's iconic 1875 painting of Parisian floor scrapers using carefully arranged fragments of torn magazine pages. Viewed up close, the image dissolves into a mosaic of colorful printed ephemera, yet from a distance the composition cohesively reconstructs the original scene of laborers bent over a gleaming wooden floor. Muniz's work challenges perceptions of image-making and mass media, blurring the boundaries between fine art, craft, and consumer culture.
