Symptoms ♨ Transmutation #7 (1/10 edition)
2024
Symptoms ♨ Transmutation #7 (2025) is a 1/10 edition from Iain Ball’s Symptoms ♨ Transmutation series. The work takes the artist’s landmark 2009 digital collages — originally transparent PNGs that circulated freely in post-internet image cultures — and subjects them to AI-mediated mutation, reimagining them as large-scale physical sculptures documented in pristine white gallery spaces. This recursive gesture collapses the aura of gallery documentation back into a new digital asset, creating a charged feedback loop where image, object, and documentation continually transmute, probing the unstable boundaries between virtual and physical in contemporary art. This process continues Ball’s long-term exploration of the unstable intersections between ecology, technology, consumer culture, and post-internet aesthetics.

Harm van den Dorpel
Dutch · b. 1981
Van den Dorpel works at the intersection of computational processes and digital collage within the NFT space, using algorithmic and AI driven systems to generate works that blur organic and synthetic visual forms. His practice shares Ball's interest in recursive mutation and the uncanny qualities that emerge when digital processes transform existing visual material.

Refik Anadol
Turkish American · b. 1985

Anadol uses AI mediated processes to transform existing data and imagery into hybrid forms that oscillate between the recognizable and the strange, much like Ball's transmutation of his earlier Symptoms series. Both artists investigate the unstable boundary between natural organic forms and synthetic technological processes through machine learning.
Memo Akten
Turkish · b. 1975
Akten's AI driven works explore the tension between ecology, consumer culture, and technology, generating uncanny hybrid imagery that sits between the banal and the transformative. His recursive use of machine learning to mutate and reinterpret visual material closely parallels Ball's method of subjecting earlier works to AI driven mutation.
