Lloyd Bruce Wescott (two works)
This diptych presents two contrasting studies in figurative photography by George Platt Lynes, a pioneering modernist photographer known for his intimate portraits and male nudes. The left panel depicts a classical male nude in contrapposto pose against a checkered background, rendered in warm sepia tones that emphasize sculptural form and musculature. The right panel shifts to a clothed portrait of a man in brown suit and waistcoat, seated and gazing to the side, creating a dialogue between idealized form and clothed identity. Both images share Lynes' characteristic formal precision and subtle tonal gradations, hallmarks of his gelatin silver print technique. The pairing suggests themes of presentation, masculinity, and the relationship between the body and social identity.
