A contemporary reimagining of Vermeer's iconic *Girl with a Pearl Earring*, Awol Erizku's *Girl with a Bamboo Earring* replaces the Dutch master's subject with a young Black woman adorned with a gold bamboo hoop earring. Shot as a chromogenic print, the photograph maintains the dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and intimate compositional format of the original while centering a figure historically excluded from the Western art canon. The work challenges traditional notions of beauty and representation, asserting the presence and dignity of Black identity within the fine art tradition.
