Yoan Capote — Palangre (muro de mar I)
Yoan Capote

Palangre (muro de mar I)

2016

A turbulent seascape rendered in moody, gestural oil paint conceals a haunting substructure of nails and fish hooks embedded across the linen surface, transforming the canvas into a physical trap as much as a painted illusion. Capote conflates the beauty and danger of the ocean surrounding Cuba, evoking the desperate crossings undertaken by those who risk their lives at sea in search of freedom. The work operates simultaneously as image and object, its barbed surface warning the viewer that what appears to be an escape route may also be a site of entrapment.

Medium
oil, nails and fish hooks on linen, mounted on panel
