American Appeal (Bridge)
2009
Yoan Capote's *American Appeal (Bridge)* is a striking mixed-media work in which thousands of fish hooks and nails are embedded into the canvas surface, collectively forming the image of a bridge stretching across a turbulent body of water. The use of fish hooks is laden with symbolic weight, evoking themes of desire, entrapment, and the perilous allure of the American Dream — particularly resonant given Capote's Cuban background and the fraught journey many Cubans undertake to reach the United States. The textured, almost tactile surface creates a haunting tension between beauty and danger, drawing the viewer in while simultaneously suggesting the hidden risks embedded within aspiration and migration.
