Les Deux Plateaux
1986
Les Deux Plateaux transforms the Cour d'Honneur of the Palais Royal with 260 striped marble columns of varying heights arranged in a grid across the courtyard floor. Created by conceptual artist Daniel Buren, this monumental installation features alternating white and black stripes painted on cylindrical shafts that rise between 60 centimeters and 2 meters, creating a visually rhythmic landscape that shifts with the viewer's perspective and natural light. The work challenges traditional notions of sculpture by activating the entire plaza as a participatory space, inviting visitors to walk among and through the columns rather than observe from a distance. Completed in 1986, this iconic public artwork exemplifies Buren's signature stripe motif and represents a pivotal moment in the integration of contemporary art into historical institutional spaces.
