untitled (to you, Heiner, with admiration and affection)
1973
This landmark installation by Dan Flavin employs commercially available fluorescent light tubes arranged in horizontal registers to flood an architectural corner with saturated yellow and pink luminosity. The title dedicates the work to Heiner Friedrich, the German art dealer and co founder of Dia Art Foundation who was a key patron and champion of Flavin throughout his career. The immersive warm glow dissolves the boundaries of the room, transforming the built environment into pure chromatic experience, a hallmark of Flavin's Minimalist practice. The work is part of the long term installation program at Dia Beacon, where it continues to draw viewers into direct sensory confrontation with light as sculptural material.
