Spirit of Detroit
1958
The Spirit of Detroit is a monumental bronze sculpture created by Marshall Fredericks and installed in 1958 at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center. The work depicts a dynamic, green-patinated female figure in a kneeling pose, her muscular form captured mid-stride as she holds aloft two golden spheres representing progress and industry. Rising approximately 40 feet, the sculpture is flanked by two classical relief medallions depicting human achievement, establishing it as a major civic landmark that embodies Detroit's industrial heritage and aspirational spirit. The figure's commanding scale, rendered in gleaming bronze against the modernist architecture of the municipal center, exemplifies mid-century public art and continues to serve as an iconic symbol of Detroit's identity and resilience.
