300 wrapped trees (Project for Avenue des Champs-Elysées)
1969
A preparatory study for one of Christo's iconic wrapping projects, this mixed-media work combines photography, drawing, and physical materials to envision the transformation of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées through the swathing of 300 trees in translucent plastic and rope. The layering of black-and-white photography with pastel, felt, and graphite reflects Christo's characteristic process of blending documentary realism with imaginative proposal, collapsing the boundary between plan and artwork. Staples, adhesive tape, and twine embedded in the composition echo the very industrial materials that would bind the trees themselves, making the study an intimate and tactile reflection of the grand public intervention it envisions.
