Black Loops & Curves No. 4
1999
This monumental etching presents a densely interwoven field of undulating black lines and curves that advance and recede across the pristine white ground of Somerset paper. The composition abandons traditional perspective in favor of an all over, non hierarchical surface where organic, ribbon like forms interlock and flow without a clear focal point, creating an optical rhythm that engages the viewer's eye in continuous movement. Created through the sugar lift aquatint technique, the work demonstrates meticulous printmaking control in rendering fine, parallel lines that modulate from thick to thin, generating a palpable sense of depth and tactility despite the work's essentially graphic nature. Operating within the conceptual and minimalist traditions, this piece exemplifies the artist's systematic approach to exploring fundamental formal relationships between line, pattern, and perception.
