Mat 90 x 120 #19-04
2019
A geometric composition of woven and painted materials arranged within a wooden frame, dominated by a gridded surface in warm ochre tones with darker burgundy and navy passages creating horizontal striations. Brass circular forms punctuate the surface at irregular intervals, while the woven Hwamunseok base shows traditional Korean textile patterns beneath layers of paint and thread. The work combines industrial materials with handcrafted textile traditions, creating tension between geometric abstraction and the organic irregularities of the woven support. Kang's practice emerges from a critical engagement with minimalism and craft, interrogating the boundaries between fine art and functional object making through meticulous material experimentation.
