The light is an industrial object, and familiar…it is a means to new art.” -- Donald Judd, 1964
1989
Dan Flavin's arrangement of red, pink, yellow, blue, and green fluorescent tubes transforms commercially manufactured light fixtures into a luminous sculptural experience. The work bathes its surrounding environment in overlapping fields of colored light, dissolving the boundaries between object and space. By elevating the industrial and the everyday into the realm of fine art, Flavin challenges traditional notions of artistic materials and the nature of perception itself.
