Pumpkin
1994
This monumental painted polyester sculpture presents a massive pumpkin form covered entirely in Kusama's signature polka dot motif, rendered in brilliant yellow and black. Installed on a concrete pier extending into calm waters off Naoshima, the work creates a striking dialogue between the organic geometry of the gourd and the infinite patterning of obsessively repeated dots. The sculpture's scale and isolation on the water transform a humble agricultural subject into an icon of contemporary Japanese art, while the oceanic setting amplifies the work's meditative quality and its relationship to infinity, a central preoccupation in Kusama's practice since the 1960s.
