Dune Farm
1919
Dune Farm is a richly rendered landscape painted in 1919 by Ross Embrose Moffett, a founding figure of the Provincetown Art Association and a central voice in American modernism after World War I. The painting depicts a sweeping coastal dune valley with horses and figures set against dramatic earthen hills, rendered in warm ochres, deep greens, and cool atmospheric blues. Moffett was deeply committed to capturing the life and landscape of Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he spent most of his career, and this early work exemplifies the energetic, painterly handling that would define his reputation. The piece is signed lower right and dates to a particularly formative period in the artist's career, just before his 1920 marriage to fellow artist Dorothy Lake Gregory.
