Angel of the North
1998
This monumental figure in weathering steel stands 66 feet tall with outstretched wings spanning 177 feet, dominating a hilltop landscape along the A1 motorway. Created by British sculptor Antony Gormley, the work combines the austere geometry of contemporary sculpture with a powerfully symbolic human form, its russet-colored steel surface developing a protective patina over time. The angel's posture, neither threatening nor comforting, embodies a tension between transcendence and earthbound presence that has made it one of Britain's most recognizable public artworks. Situated to be glimpsed by countless travelers, the sculpture transforms industrial Gateshead into a site of spiritual and cultural significance, inviting reflection on human aspiration and vulnerability.
