Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddha)
1993
This monumental bronze Buddha statue, known as the Big Buddha, sits serenely atop a lush mountainous landscape on Lantau Island, commanding a presence that melds spiritual contemplation with architectural grandeur. Standing 34 meters tall and weighing 250 tons, the figure is rendered in warm bronze tones that glow against the verdant green hills and clear blue sky, its graceful robes and meditative posture conveying profound tranquility. Commissioned by Po Lin Monastery and completed in 1993, the sculpture exemplifies late twentieth century Asian religious monument design, combining traditional Buddhist iconography with modern engineering and casting techniques. Elevated prominently above the surrounding vegetation, the work functions as both a spiritual focal point for pilgrims and a striking landmark visible across the Hong Kong landscape, embodying the enduring dialogue between nature, faith, and human creation.
