The Sphere
1971
This monumental bronze sphere, created by Fritz Koenig in 1971, stands as a powerful symbol of global harmony and interconnection. Originally positioned at the World Trade Center's plaza, the sculpture survived the tragic events of 2001 and was later reinstalled at nearby Liberty Park, where it now serves as a poignant memorial and beacon of resilience. The massive golden orb, cradled by an abstract supporting form, measures 25 feet in diameter and weighs 120 tons, making it one of the most recognizable public artworks in New York City. Its weathered patina and visible damage marks tell a story of endurance and transformation, while the piece's geometric simplicity speaks to modernist ideals of universal form and meaning.
