Purvis Young was a self-taught African American artist from the Overtown neighborhood of Miami who created vibrant, expressionistic paintings depicting urban life, horses, and social themes. Working primarily with found materials including wood, cardboard, and house paint, he produced thousands of works that documented the struggles and vitality of his community. His work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, and gained significant recognition in the outsider art world, with his pieces now held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
