Max Weber (1881, 1961) was a pioneering American modernist painter born in Bialystok, Russia (present-day Poland), who emigrated to the United States as a child. He studied in Paris, where he absorbed the influences of Cézanne, Fauvism, and Cubism, becoming one of the first artists to introduce these avant-garde European movements to American audiences. His work spans a wide range, from bold Cubist compositions and Expressionist figure studies to later introspective paintings of Jewish themes and subjects.
