Titian
Titian, born Tiziano Vecellio in Pieve di Cadore in the Veneto region of northern Italy, is widely regarded as the greatest painter of the Venetian school and one of the most influential artists in the history of Western art. He trained under Giovanni Bellini and was also influenced by Giorgione, with whom he collaborated early in his career. Titian mastered the use of oil paint to an extraordinary degree, developing a richly sensuous style characterized by luminous color, dynamic brushwork, and an unparalleled ability to render texture, flesh, and fabric. His work spanned portraiture, mythological scenes, religious subjects, and landscapes, and he excelled in every category he approached. Among his most celebrated works are the Assumption of the Virgin painted for the Frari Basilica in Venice, the Venus of Urbino, Bacchus and Ariadne now housed in the National Gallery in London, and a series of mythological paintings known as the poesie commissioned by King Philip II of Spain. His portraits of figures such as Emperor Charles V and Pope Paul III demonstrate his extraordinary psychological insight and his ability to elevate portraiture to a level of supreme dignity and complexity. Titian was remarkably prolific across a career spanning nearly seven decades, and his late works, painted with increasingly loose and expressive brushwork, are considered precursors to Impressionism and modern painterly abstraction. Titian's significance in art history cannot be overstated. He was celebrated across Europe during his own lifetime, receiving commissions from popes, emperors, and kings, and was granted the remarkable honor of being made a Count Palatine and Knight of the Golden Spur by Charles V. His approach to color, known as Venetian colorism, placed him in direct contrast to the Florentine emphasis on disegno or draftsmanship, and his legacy influenced painters from Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck to Diego Velazquez and Rembrandt. He remains a cornerstone of Renaissance and Baroque art and a touchstone for any serious study of the painted image.
