Red Open with White Line
1979
A commanding abstract composition dominated by a field of vivid cadmium red, with two black rectangular forms rendered in etched line positioned in the upper right quadrant. Created in 1979, this work is part of Motherwell's celebrated 'Open' series, in which the artist explored the tension between expansive color fields and minimal linear geometry. Numbered 46/56 and initialed by the artist in ink lower left, with the publisher's blindstamp lower right, the print is framed floated in an acid-free mat with wood frame and plexiglass. Catalogued as Belknap 207, this is a museum-quality example from one of the most important Abstract Expressionist printmakers of the 20th century.
