Suspended
1977
A monumental outdoor sculpture by celebrated Israeli artist Menashe Kadishman (1932–2015), 'Suspended' (1977) consists of two massive weathering steel rectangular volumes dramatically balanced against one another, one tilted at a sharp diagonal while the other stands upright. The work exemplifies Kadishman's lifelong engagement with mass, gravity, and the tension between stasis and movement, seemingly defying the enormous weight of the Cor-Ten steel. The sculpture's rich, oxidized rust patina integrates naturally into its landscape setting, shifting in color and texture with the seasons and weather. A significant work from a pivotal period in Kadishman's career, it was gifted to its current institution by prominent collectors Muriel and Philip I. Berman of Allentown, PA.
