Crouching Spider
2003
This monumental steel spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois is part of her iconic series created in her later years. The work is displayed at the Donum Estate, where it was specifically housed in a custom structure to protect it from the elements. Made from welded steel rather than bronze, the sculpture showcases visible welding marks that give it a raw, lifelike quality. Bourgeois viewed the spider as a benign creature representing her mother, a tapestry restorer, and as a symbol of protection.
