Les Femmes du Maroc: Harem Women Writing
A richly layered chromogenic print by Lalla Essaydi depicts Moroccan women draped in white fabric and reclining in an intimate domestic space, their bodies and surroundings densely covered in flowing Arabic calligraphy. The work challenges Orientalist fantasies of the harem by reclaiming the female body as a site of text and authorship, transforming what was once a space of confinement into one of intellectual agency. Essaydi's meticulous composition merges photography, calligraphy, and cultural critique to assert the complex identities of Arab women beyond the male gaze.
