Walking to the Sky
2002
Walking to the Sky presents a dramatic procession of nine life-sized fiberglass and stainless steel figures ascending a soaring 100-foot steel pole, their poses frozen in dynamic mid-stride as they climb toward the heavens. Created by Jonathan Borofsky, this monumental public sculpture combines pop art sensibility with existential inquiry, depicting figures in everyday clothing and postures seemingly defying gravity as they advance upward in a vertical choreography. The work's towering scale transforms urban space into a stage for human aspiration, while the progression of figures suggests themes of individual journey, collective endeavor, and transcendence. Installed in a prominent Dallas plaza, the stainless steel structure gleams against the sky, making the impossible feat of vertical ascent a striking visual and conceptual centerpiece.
