Sagrada Família (exterior sculpture program)
1882
The Sagrada Família basilica rises dramatically against the Barcelona skyline, its soaring stone towers crowned with gilded crosses that catch the light against pale limestone facades. Four main spires pierce upward with intricate Gothic and Modernist detailing, while subsidiary turrets and sculptural ornamentation cover the exterior surfaces in an explosive display of religious symbolism and naturalistic forms. The distinctive east-facing Nativity Façade, visible on the left, contrasts with the central towers through its warmer, more densely carved stonework. Designed by Antoni Gaudí and continuously under construction since 1883, this monumental basilica represents one of the most audacious reinterpretations of sacred architecture, fusing medieval cathedral tradition with organic Modernism and pioneering structural innovation. The work remains a UNESCO World Heritage site and Barcelona's most visited monument, embodying the tension between artistic vision and architectural feasibility across more than a century of labor.
