"monument" for V. Tatlin
Dan Flavin's "monument" for V. Tatlin is a towering, vertical construction of cool white fluorescent light tubes arranged in a symmetrical architectural form, evoking the utopian ambitions of Russian Constructivist Vladimir Tatlin's unrealized Monument to the Third International. The work transforms industrial, commercially available lighting fixtures into a luminous sculptural presence that floods the surrounding space with clean, diffuse light. Through his deliberate use of the most ordinary and functional of materials, Flavin collapses the boundary between art object and everyday environment, challenging the viewer to reconsider what constitutes beauty and meaning in the mundane.
