Running Fence
1975
A preparatory study for Christo and Jeanne-Claude's monumental 1976 environmental installation, this work combines gouache and collage on board to envision the sweeping white nylon fence that stretched 24.5 miles across the hills of Sonoma and Marin Counties in California. The layered collage elements capture the undulating, ribbon-like quality of the fabric panels as they cascaded over the rolling landscape before dissolving into the Pacific Ocean. Sealed beneath Plexiglas, the work reflects the artists' practice of creating detailed proposal drawings and studies to both plan and document their ambitious, temporary public works.
