Bailey Fountain
1932
Designed by architectural firm Eggers and Higgins and completed in 1932, the Bailey Fountain stands as a monumental centerpiece of Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn. Cast in bronze with a granite base, the fountain features an allegorical sculptural core crowned by soaring water jets that create a dramatic veil of spray, reaching heights that dwarf the surrounding urban landscape. The composition merges Beaux Arts tradition with modernist geometry, with classical figural sculpture emerging from beneath the fountain's powerful arcing water, creating a striking interplay between solid form and fluid movement. Framed by mature trees and anchored within a circular plaza, the work functions as both functional water feature and symbolic civic monument, embodying early twentieth century optimism about urban public space.
