The Thinker (Le Penseur)
1920
This is a reduction cast (c. 1920) of Rodin's iconic The Thinker (Le Penseur), originally conceived 1880–81, with the reduction conceived in 1903. The deeply patinated dark bronze depicts a muscular male nude in a contemplative pose, seated with chin resting on fist — famously representing the poet Dante contemplating the souls in The Gates of Hell. The figure's tension between physical power and intellectual stillness exemplifies Rodin's mastery of expressive naturalism. This example is courtesy of the Cooper Family and was spotted in a museum context.

Notes
Originally conceived 1880–81; reduction conceived 1903; cast c. 1920. The Thinker was first exhibited independently at Galerie Georges Petit in 1889. Rodin retained it in the final design for The Gates of Hell, first cast in bronze in 1925 (posthumously). Also known as The Poet, the figure represents Dante. The Gates of Hell was first cast in bronze several years after the artist's death in 1917. Wall text visible in background at exhibition.
