Hero und Leander
2005
A monumental and brooding seascape, Kiefer's *Hero und Leander* evokes the tragic Greek myth through layers of oil, emulsion, and shellac that build a turbulent, storm-ravaged ocean of somber grays and blacks. Soil and metal embedded into the board's surface lend the work a raw, geological weight, while coils of barbed wire pierce the composition like wounds, collapsing ancient myth into the violence of modern history. The overwhelming scale and material density transform romantic longing and loss into something primal and elemental, as if the sea itself has become a monument to human suffering.
