Two works: (i) Fairytale - 1001 Chairs 054; (ii) Fairytale - 1001 Chairs 065
2007
These two works belong to Ai Weiwei's monumental *Fairytale* project, realized during Documenta 12 in 2007, in which the artist brought 1,001 Chinese citizens to Kassel, Germany, as living participants in a social and conceptual artwork. The numbered chairs depicted are traditional Chinese wooden seats that were used to furnish the living quarters of the participants, serving as both functional objects and symbolic artifacts connecting personal narrative to collective experience. Through this project, Weiwei challenged boundaries between art, migration, and human interaction, transforming everyday objects into charged witnesses of cultural exchange and displacement.
