May Stevens (1924, 2019) was an American feminist artist and activist known for her politically charged paintings and prints that addressed issues of race, gender, and class. She is best known for her 'Big Daddy' series of the 1960s, 70s, depicting an authoritarian male figure as a symbol of patriarchal and political oppression, and her 'Ordinary/Extraordinary' series juxtaposing her working-class mother with Rosa Luxemburg. A founding member of the feminist art journal Heresies, Stevens was a significant figure in both the American feminist art movement and politically engaged figurative painting.
