Kazuya Sakai (1927, 2001) was an Argentine-Japanese abstract painter, writer, and jazz musician who became a central figure in the Latin American avant-garde. Born in Buenos Aires to Japanese parents and educated in Japan, he returned to Argentina where he was associated with the Arte Concreto and later abstract movements, exhibiting alongside artists of the Grupo Espartaco and contributing to the literary journal Sur. His canvases are characterized by dynamic gestural forms, rich color fields, and a synthesis of Eastern and Western aesthetic sensibilities.
