Karl Knaths was an American modernist painter who spent much of his career in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he became a significant figure in the Cape Cod art community. Deeply influenced by Cézanne and Cubism, he developed a distinctive style that combined geometric abstraction with rich, expressive color and a grounded connection to everyday subjects such as maritime scenes, still lifes, and rural landscapes. His work was recognized through inclusion in major museum collections, including the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., where patron Duncan Phillips was an early and ardent supporter, and he exhibited widely throughout the mid-20th century.
