Herbert Zangs (1924, 2003) was a German artist associated with the post-war avant-garde, known for his pioneering 'Weißbilder' (white paintings) created in the late 1950s, which placed him among early practitioners of monochromatic and reductive abstraction in Europe. His work explored texture, materiality, and the expressive potential of white pigment applied in relief-like surfaces, anticipating later developments in Arte Povera and Minimalism. Zangs remained a somewhat underrecognized figure during his lifetime but has gained increasing critical attention posthumously for his innovative contribution to European abstraction.
