Alexej von Jawlensky (1864, 1941) was a Russian expressionist painter who spent much of his career in Germany, becoming a pivotal figure in the early 20th-century avant-garde. He was a key member of the New Munich Artist's Association, Der Blaue Reiter group, and later Die Blaue Vier. He is best known for his intensely colored portraits and meditative abstract head series.
