Five Delft Shovels
Five ordinary metal shovels are transformed into decorative objects through the meticulous application of traditional Delft blue-and-white enamel painting, adorning their blades with the intricate floral and pictorial motifs characteristic of Dutch ceramic heritage. Delvoye subverts the utilitarian nature of the working-class tool by elevating it with a craft tradition associated with refinement and cultural prestige. The tension between the humble, labor-associated shovel and its ornate decoration challenges distinctions between fine art, craft, and everyday objects.
