Kitzsteinhorn II
1997
Two side-by-side chromogenic prints capture a vast, snow-covered alpine landscape reduced to near abstraction through Niedermayr's characteristic use of overexposure and pale, bleached tones. Tiny human figures are scattered across the glacial terrain of Kitzsteinhorn, dwarfed by the immensity of the mountain environment and rendered almost ghostlike against the white expanse. The diptych format reinforces a sense of panoramic scale while subtly fracturing the scene, inviting the viewer to question the relationship between human presence and the overwhelming forces of nature.
