Shoeshine Boy, after Lewis Hine from Rebus
A striking digital chromogenic print by Vik Muniz, this work reimagines Lewis Hine's iconic documentary photograph of a shoeshine boy through Muniz's signature technique of constructing images from unexpected materials. Upon closer inspection, the seemingly straightforward portrait dissolves into a complex mosaic of carefully arranged objects and imagery, challenging the viewer's perception of the original's social commentary. Muniz pays homage to Hine's pioneering social realism while simultaneously layering new meaning through his inventive process of visual deconstruction and reconstruction.
